Markham’s History

Markham was first occupied by the Iroquois around 1000 AD, who lived in semi-permanent towns and grew corn, squash, beans, and sunflowers in the lush soil of the Katabokakonk; or “river of easy entrance.” The river and valley were frequently used to route to the north area. Five native tribes speaking kindred languages—the Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oneida peoples—formed the Five Iroquois Nations in the 17th century. The “longhouse,” a collection of these multi-family buildings that made up an Iroquois town, was a characteristic structure created by the Iroquois.

The French established a colony in Quebec City in 1608, and from there, towns along the St. Lawrence River’s borders. They began to explore further inland, eventually claiming the region that is today Markham.

When John Graves Simcoe was named the first Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada in 1791, the Town of Markham was born. Simcoe’s actions as Lieutenant Governor had an immediate influence on Markham.

Markham gets its name from a place with a lot of history and resonance. The Archbishop of York, William Markham, was given the name Markham Township in 1791. Markham was formed in 1872 and by 1891 had grown to a population of 1,100 people. Simcoe was also responsible for naming the Township after his friend, the Archbishop of York at the time, William Markham.

As a result of the urban sprawl from Toronto, Markham was constituted as a town in 1971. The population of Markham was 56,000 in 1976. Since then, the population has more than quadrupled, with new subdivisions expanding at a breakneck pace. The 1990s brought a period of unprecedented growth to Markham. Between 1996 and 2001, the population grew by 41%, making it one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada. This growth has continued into the 21st century, with Markham’s population now exceeding 342,000.

Markam, which is still rich in agriculture, is Canada’s preeminent high technology center, with a reputation for cutting-edge products and services all over the world. Markam is now known as “Canada’s High-tech Capital.”
