Newmarket’s History

Newmarket has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s when Europeans first settled it. Newmarket’s first settler, Joseph Hill, had a tiny wooden mill with two millstones between which he processed wheat, and his mill produced its first bushel of flour in the week before Christmas in 1801. The mill was located on the river’s west bank, just south of Water Street now.

The community was mostly established on the town’s south side, with farmland around it. By 1846, the population had grown to around 600 people. Six churches or chapels, a post office, five stores, three pubs, and other tradesmen were all present. Two-grain mills, two breweries, a distillery, one tannery, a foundry, a carding machine, and a fabric factory were among the industries. Newmarket was incorporated as a village in 1857 and a town in 1880.

Newmarket’s growth began in the mid-19th century with the construction of a number of important infrastructure projects, including the arrival of the Ontario, Simcoe, and Huron Railway and the construction of a bridge over the river. The coming of the railway spurred Newmarket’s growth as a commercial and industrial centre. Many businesses, including a foundry, tannery, and fabric factory, were established in the town. The town continued to grow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the construction of a number of factories and businesses.
