North York’s History

On June 13, 1922, the Township of North York was founded in the rural portion of the Township of York. The southern section of York, which borders the Old City of Toronto, had become progressively urbanized in the previous decade, while the northern portion remained rural farmland.

North York has a storied past. Many people in North York supported the Upper Canada Rebellion of 1837, particularly in the villages of Lansing, Willowdale, and Newtonbrook. Some of these towns’ leaders were charged with high treason and fled to the United States, where they remained for many years before coming home.

North York City Centre, the city’s central business center, was recognized as a borough in 1967 and a city in 1979, attracting high-density housing, rapid transit, and a number of corporate offices. After its establishment in 1953, it became Metropolitan Toronto’s fastest-growing area because it is close to Old Toronto. In 1998, North York was combined with the rest of Metropolitan Toronto to form the new city of Toronto, and it has since acted as the city’s secondary economic center outside of Downtown Toronto. The former City of North York is now the largest district in the 3-million-person amalgamated City of Toronto.

North York was once recognized as a regional agricultural crossroads with a smattering of communities. Following World War II, the area grew rapidly, and by the 1950s and 1960s, it had taken on the appearance of many other large North American suburbs.
