Richmond Hill’s History

Richmond Hill began as a small community, part of which was in Vaughan Township and part of which was in Markham Township. Formerly known as Miles’ High Hill, the town was named after British politician Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond. Richmond Hill was formed as a hamlet in 1872, then a town in 1957, and finally a city in 2019.

Balsar and Katharine Munshaw, along with their children John, George, Jacob, Betsy, and Polly, were the first European residents at Richmond Hill, arriving in the spring of 1794 from Pennsylvania. In the Elgin Mills area, they cleared a block of land (then still in Markham). Many First Nations have passed through Richmond Hill throughout the years, and Indigenous peoples from all across Turtle Island now call it home.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Richmond Hill’s population continued to grow as the town became increasingly urbanized. The growth of the city was intimately related to the development of Yonge Street, which was designed largely as a military thoroughfare by John Graves Simcoe, the Province of Upper Canada’s first Lieutenant-Governor.

Today, Richmond Hill is one of Canada’s fastest-growing communities. The town is currently undergoing a large-scale transformation, with many new developments and construction projects underway.
