Vaughan’s History
In 1615, the French explorer Étienne Brûlé crossed the Humber Trail and became the first European to pass through Vaughan. Vaughan was then first settled by the Pennsylvanian Germans in the early 1800s. The area was later claimed by the British Crown and became part of York County in 1793. On the other hand, Vaughan did not see settlements until the townships were established in 1792, as the area was regarded to be highly remote, and access was difficult due to the lack of roads.
In 1783, the city was named after Benjamin Vaughan, a British politician and diplomat who signed a peace treaty with the United States. During the early 19th century, Vaughan’s road network was gradually improved as roads were built to connect Vaughan with other parts of York County. By 1837, the city had a total of seven roads that connected it to other parts of the county. Today, the city is a diverse community with a strong economy.
